Legendary Russian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja performs with the ICO for the first time

The Irish Chamber Orchestra performs with the legendary Russian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja for the first time.  She performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, one of his best works. A pinnacle of the repertoire, it is an enthralling eloquent work.

The Irish Chamber Orchestra performs with the legendary Russian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja for the first time.  She performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, a typical example of his craft and one of his best works.  It is one of twenty-seven composed across a two-year prolific period.  A pinnacle of the repertoire, it is an enthralling eloquent work.

Elisabeth Leonskaja exceptional talent brought her to study at the Moscow Conservatory. While still a student at the Conservatory, she won prizes in the prestigious Enescu, Marguerite Long and Queen Elizabeth international piano competitions. Elisabeth Leonskaja’s musical development was shaped or influenced to a decisive degree by her collaboration with Sviatoslav Richter. The master recognized her exceptional talent and fostered her development not only through teaching and giving her advice but also by inviting her to play numerous duets with him

With Shostakovich as a teacher, Elisabeth Leonskaja was part of a restricted group of students invited to perform for the master at home.  She stood out on the international platform for her undisputed talent and her unique approach to the piano repertoire. Leonskaja performs with Widmann in his brilliant Fever Fantasy, inspired by Schumann’s First Violin Sonata.  Weber wrote his Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra in E flat, which broke new ground by affording the clarinet a new measure of prominence and displaying its wide-ranging virtuosity. Mendelssohn’s Sinfoniesatz in C minor is full of colour, warmth and brilliance.
