Limerick Autism Group is a Not for profit organization that provides socially inclusive activities for people with autism and their families. Parents Keith Enright and Caroline Hogan founded the organisation due to the lack of socially inclusive activities available for their own children with autism spectrum disorder. Limerick Autism Group provides camps, special needs sibling groups, movement groups and they are working closely with local businesses to support them to become autism/sensory friendly.

Limerick Autism Group is asking people, schools, businesses, and organisations to support them on World Autism Day which is Tuesday, April 2 for their #borntostandout Challenge by wearing as many colours as you can, including different shoes, socks, clothes etc. Participants are asked to post pictures to their Facebook page with the hashtag, #borntostandoutchallenge.

The aim of this challenge is to raise awareness in Limerick and surrounding communities about autism and how it can affect people in your workplace, school or college. All funds raised will support people with autism directly by providing socially inclusive activities. Limerick Autism Group launched its first annual challenge, ahead of World Autism Day, on Tuesday, March 26 at Thomond Park Stadium.

Keith Enright, co-founder of Limerick Autism Group told ilovelimerick a little bit about the work they do ‘Limerick Autism Group is a not for profit community organisation based in Limerick City. We provide activities for children and adults with Autism and their families.’ Limerick Autism Group not only provides support for local families but families all over Ireland.

Caroline Hogan said ‘All money raised goes directly to supporting families in Limerick this is run by myself, Keith, Candice and Susan. We began by providing Autism Sensory Camps for 48 families and now over 200 families are supported through camps, music therapy, psychotherapy, counselling sessions and autism-friendly initiatives. Our aims include providing support to the entire family unit by providing information and supporting community inclusion.’

Keith encourages everyone to take part in the challenge ‘We think that individuality is key and that all people with disabilities or without disabilities are individuals, they all have their own personalities. We would like to get companies, schools, families around the city to take part. It doesn’t matter if it is big or small as long as each person gets to express themselves in their own way.’

Limerick Autism Group is always looking for volunteers. Autism affects over 3500 people in Limerick so join in on the challenge and donate €2 to an amazing charity. Donate at www.lag.ie/borntostandout.
