Verdi Requiem is one of the most dramatic, and undoubtedly the most operatic work of its type!

It has been an exciting period of LCU as in February the group travelled to Halle in Germany to participate in the annual Happy Birthday Handel festivities.

Halle is the birthplace of Handel and since 2000 Handel’s birthday is celebrated with an extra special performance of the Messiah. The Messiah is a favourite to many in the LCU as it is performed by the choir every second year in the run-up to Christmas.

Over 450 choristers from Germany, Ireland, and across Europe gathered for three days to rehearse and perform Handel’s most famous composition. Under the baton of Ireland’s own Proinnsias Ó Duinn, the choir performed to a full house on the 24th of February accompanied by the Staatskapelle Halle Orchestra in Handel Hall, Halle.

Members of the choir had the opportunity to sightsee which included a visit to Handel’s family home in the town. It was a wonderful occasion and one all who travelled enjoyed immensely with many members making plans to go back again in the coming years.

If you would like to hear this wonderful piece of music LCU will be rounding off its 60th Anniversary year with a performance of the Messiah in UCH on 30th November 2024.

The LCU’s next performance is on April 20th 2024 in UCH when the choir accompanied by the LCU orchestra and soloists will be signing Verdi Requiem.
