Limerick City of Culture is the only place you will want to be to ring in 2014! ‘City of Culture NYE’ brings you a trio of world class events to to celebrate Limerick’s designation as the first EVER Irish National City of Culture!
Limerick City of Culture NYE Pageant and NYE SKY will bring the streets and skies of Limerick City to life on New Year’s Eve in what promises to be the most exciting and exuberant interactive family event Limerick has ever seen…and it’s completely free!
These family friendly events will be followed by a NYE Music Concert featuring an outstanding line-up of top class performers.
The New Year’s Eve celebrations will set the tone for the next 365 days in what will be a defining era for Limerick.
5.30pm | The Milk Market to King John’s Castle
Bringing a vibrant, interactive, family-friendly street event from Limerick’s market quarter to the medieval quarter, the City of Culture Pageant will see hundreds of professional performers and community groups acting out an epic story of hope and new beginnings.
The City of Culture NYE Pageant will transport the streets of Limerick into wonderful fairyland full of fantastical characters, glowing floats and magical music.
This participative parade will illuminate Limerick as thousands of people carrying glowing lanterns walk through the city’s streets. As the Pageant floats and performers assemble in the Milk Market from midday on New Year’s Eve, a family-friendly concert will kick-start the excitement in the Milk Market. This concert will feature artists from Derry, Limerick and beyond, bringing you an eclectic mix of musical entertainment to help you start your illuminated journey.
From 6.30pm, the procession will be led by the multi-award winning street theatre company Bui Bolg through the fully pedestrianised streets of Limerick, along the banks of the river Shannon to the Medieval Quarter.
8pm | Recommended viewing points: Clancy’s Strand, Arthur’s Quay Park, Sarsfield Bridge
The Limerick night skies and Medieval Quarter will be transformed into a live storybook using cutting edge digital video mapping, special lighting effects which will be projected onto the historic buildings around the area, live narration and accompanying specially composed music will float through the night skies to ensure you and your family feel like you’re part of the story tale.
The stunning King John’s Castle will act a backdrop for the fire spectacle as it reflects and dances along the river, truly bringing the city to life.
In addition to the thousands of people that will gather along the city’s bridge and riverbanks, this soundtrack will be broadcasted live on Limerick’s Live 95fm, bringing the celebration to homes all around Limerick!
The fireworks will commence at 20.14, announcing with a bang that Limerick is the City of Culture 2014.
8.30pm | Merchant’s Quay
City of Culture Music is the perfect way to ring in the New Year, providing you with an incredible night’s entertainment. This outdoor concert, with the spire of St. Mary’s Cathedral as a backdrop, will be broadcasted live on RTE TV.
A series of world-class performances, combined with the bells of St. Mary’s cathedral heralding in the New Year, will provide an exciting and dynamic launch to Limerick City of Culture 2014.
In a world exclusive performance Dolores O’Riordan, lead singer of the Cranberries, will join the Irish Chamber Orchestra on stage to perform some of the band’s greatest hits.
Accompanying Dolores is one of the most critically acclaimed urban music acts of the moment, Maverick Sabre. The concert will begin at 20.30, with many more acts to be announced.
