Limerick Purple Flag Weekend highlights importance of vibrant economy
A number of Limerick’s iconic buildings and landmarks, along with staff at some of Limerick’s best-known pubs will be going purple this weekend for the Limerick Purple Flag weekend.
King John’s Castle, The Treaty Stone, the Hunt Museum, the Milk Market and Limerick City and County Council’s offices at Merchant’s Quay will be turning purple, while purple flags are flying from the bridges, the quays and William Street this weekend (6-8 October) as part of national Purple Flag weekend.
While enjoying your night out, Smyth’s and the Icon are also turning purple, with staff at Smyth’s, the Icon, Flannery’s and House wearing purple t-shirts in support of Limerick’s night-time economy.
It’s all to promote the night time economy of Limerick, following the awarding of the Purple Flag to the city in recognition of the proper running of its night time economy and to showcase what Limerick has to offer.
The evening and night time economy is an important sector of the overall economy and businesses in Limerick are being encouraged to get behind The Purple Flag and recognise the advantages of having it.
The Purple Flag is recognised internationally and can be a very important asset when it comes to marketing the city.
Purple Flag is an accreditation process similar to the Green Flag award for parks and the Blue Flag for beaches. It leads to Purple Flag status for town and city centres that meet or surpass the standards of excellence in managing the evening and night time economy.
Majella O’Brien, Tourism Section with Limerick City and County Council said: “The Purple Flag is the industry standard of quality for a city’s night time economy. Limerick is delighted to have achieved this prestigious award. It shows that our night time economy is well managed and people can be assured of the best standards of safety and comfort when they come into Limerick city.”
“This weekend is about spreading the message about the Purple Flag and how it can help businesses.”
Dr James Ring, Chief Executive of Limerick Chamber said: “The Purple Flag is a great marketing tool that businesses can use to their advantage. I would encourage all businesses involved in the evening and night time economy to get behind the flag and support its aims and contribute to developments in the future. The flag indicates that our night time economy is well managed and that is an advantage for Limerick.”
A Purple Flag working group has been established and is an extremely positive and diverse group. New members are welcome bringing with them new ideas to help grow the evening and night time economy in Limerick.
