Open call for participation in the Pigtown Culture & Food Series 2018 taking place in the autumn – kicking off at the start of September and running throughout the month and beyond.
This autumn, the Pigtown Culture & Food Series is back for its second year in a harvest celebration of Limerick’s food culture. They are looking for Limerick businesses to get on board again this year adopting the pig theme in a big piggy celebration for European Year of Cultural Heritage.
2018 is European Year of Cultural Heritage and the series is inspired by the history of Limerick’s famous bacon industry in an exciting programme of themed events kicking off in September 2018 in Limerick city and county.
Developed by the Limerick Food Group and supported by Limerick City and County Council, the series celebrates Limerick’s unique heritage as a way to showcase the great food and drink available locally, building on our deep-rooted food heritage.
Last year they saw market events, food demos, historical walks, themed events and exhibitions, food tours, panel discussions, restaurant nights with special themed menus, industry networking events, and not forgetting the Culture Night Pig Parade.
A lot of that will be returning this year and local businesses are invited to join the festival programme by adopting the Pigtown theme in September – whether it’s restaurant specials for the duration, or one-off themed menu nights, movie nights, or other creative ways to embrace our pig history, organisers are open to all ideas and are looking for the support of Limerick business to get as many people as possible involved in the celebration.
The series features events such as the Culture Night Pig Parade; ‘Beyond the Pig – veganism in a meat eaters world’ panel discussion; ‘Ancient Irish food – what did our ancestors grow, pick and catch’ lecture and discussion and Urban Foraging Walks by local author and ethnobotanist Theresa Storey; Valerie O’Connor’s ‘Pig in the City’ food trail; Pigtown Tasting Menu produced by students of LIT’s Food and Tourism Department; and ‘The Apprentice – Pigtown Style’ hosted by Garretts Butchers where Limerick Butcher Apprentices will compete against visiting international craft butcher apprentices to be crowned the Pigtown Champion.
The Pigtown Culture & Food Series kicks off at the start of September across Limerick. For further details, search #PigtownLimerick or ‘Pigtown Food Series’ on social media. Contact [email protected] to get involved.
