The season begins on Monday, September 23 with everyone’s favourite musical film – Grease! Released in 1978, Grease has been an audience favourite ever since, packed with iconic characters and some of the greatest sing-along songs of all time! The Autumn/Winter UCH Cinema Season 2019 has been announced with eight screenings on selected Sunday afternoon and Monday evenings from September to December.
As always the UCH Cinema Season is a wonderful mix of family favourites, epic classics, and offerings from National Theatre Live and Exhibition on Screen.

On Monday, October 7, see the National Theatre Live screening of King Lear, starring the legendary Ian McKellen. Hailed as an “extraordinarily moving”, the Chichester Festival Theatre’s production, which was filmed live, received five-star reviews for its sell-out run.
The award-winning Spanish language film (with English subtitles) Pan’s Labyrinth is this year’s UL International Education Division Pick and will be screened on Monday 21 October. Set in 1944 Falangist Spain, it tells the story of a young girl who must prove her royalty by surviving three gruesome tasks. Directed by the acclaimed Guillermo del Toro, Pan’s Labyrinth received high praise of its visual effects, direction and cinematography when it opened in 2006.
On Sunday, November 3 families are in for a treat with a screening of the original (and best!) Ghostbusters starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Sigourney Weaver. Not only is this going to be the perfect end to the mid-term break, but audiences will also be helping a great cause as proceeds from this screening will go towards the Live 95 Helping Limerick Children charity campaign!

Leonardo: The Works is the subject of this Season’s Exhibition on Screen on Monday 4 November, with all of the artists’ attributed paintings presented in Ultra HD quality, never before seen on the big screen. Key works include The Mona Lisa, The Last Supper and more than a dozen others. The film also looks at da Vinci’s inventiveness, military foresight and ability to navigate the treacherous politics of the day! A fascinating insight!
It’s time for a black comedy thriller on Monday 18 November with the screening of the 1996 film Fargo starring Frances McDormand. Having enjoyed more recent acclaim as a Netflix series, this original feature film was the beginning of it all, receiving no less than seven Academy Award nominations and winning for Best Actress and Original Screenplay. This is the Coen Brothers at their very best.
Look no further than UCH Cinema on Sunday 24 November to kick start the Christmas spirit with a screening of what is considered to be one of the best festive films of all time – Home Alone! First released almost thirty years ago in 1990, Home Alone, starring a very young Macaulay Culkin and the hilarious Joe Pesci, became the highest-grossing live-action comedy film of all time, holding the record until 2011.
UCH Cinema Season for Autumn/Winter 2019 ends on an absolute high on Monday 2 December with the epic, historical romance that is Gone With the Wind. Fans of this iconic film, set against the background of the American South during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, will be delighted to experience it on the big screen, as it was originally meant to be viewed.
Gone With the Wind received 10 Academy Awards including Best Actress for Vivienne Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara and Best Supporting Actress for Hattie McDaniel who became the first African American actor to receive one. It is deservedly regarded as one of the greatest films of all time.
