UL announces landmark Traveller Studies research position

The University of Limerick is set to become the first Irish institute to offer a Traveller Studies research and teaching position.

The post, created within the Sociology Department, is designed to take a central role in researching Traveller rights and social inclusion. This research will be used within undergraduate and postgraduate curriculums across varying departments.

The announcement of a designated Traveller Studies position has been met with support and enthusiasm from UL’s academic community. Dr Ross MacMillan, Head of the Sociology Department in UL, will lead the hiring process for the new post. 

Dr MacMillan told I Love Limerick, “A first of its kind, the position in Traveller Studies will support research on Traveller experiences,  social integration, and social inequality in Ireland, as well as develop Traveller studies as part of the social science curriculum at UL.  

“Supported by the Office of the President and the Dean of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the position will be hosted by the Sociology department, who are honoured to be part of UL’s ongoing tradition of innovation and excellence in third-level education.”

Applicants must possess a doctoral degree and have experience conducting research alongside the Travelling community. They must be engaged in current research and have previously lectured on Traveller issues at university level.

Joining online praise around the landmark research position, Dr Jennifer Schweppe, UL Senior Lecturer in Law, said, “The Sociology Department has just advertised a lectureship in Traveller Studies. Brilliant development by my colleagues there, and a hugely important step for all of us in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences and the UL academy in general.”
