Róisín Ní Riain clinched Ireland’s first gold medal of the championships as she won a tight women’s 100m breaststroke SB13 final on day two of the 2024 European Para Swimming Championships in Madeira, Portugal.

It was a hotly contested competition, as Spain’s Marian Polo Lopez pushed Ní Riain to the very end, with the Limerick athlete securing gold with an incredible margin of 0.97 seconds ahead of the Spanish athlete, the performance saw Ní Riain set a personal best, finishing in 1:18:00.

Ni Riain’s strong finish sees her upgrade her 100m butterfly S13 silver medal from Sunday to a victory, with Spain’s Polo Lopez taking the silver medal and Neutral athlete Mariia Latritskaia taking the bronze.

Speaking after the race Róisín Ní Riain said, “That was a pretty good swim, happy with the time and a great race. I always think the hundred breaststroke is a fun one for me just to get out and race. I love the event so I’m very pleased with that.”

Ní Riain was the only Irish swimmer in action on the day claiming gold in the 100 Breaststroke SB13 Final, this follows another great performance from the Drombanna native on the opening day which saw her take silver in the 100m Butterfly.

Speaking after her opening day performance, Róisín felt she could have pushed for a faster time while looking forward to the summer as she aims for Paris 2024, she said, “I think maybe I would have liked the time to be a little bit faster you know, I’ll have to go back and have a look and see what I can improve going forward for the rest of the year and leading into the summer.”

The Drombanna athlete is already a world champion having won a gold medal in the 100m backstroke at the Para Swimming World Championships in Manchester in 2023, an event she won in a Personal Best of a little over a minute.

The Drombanna native scooped her second gold medal of the competition on Wednesday night in the S13 100m Backstroke event in a time of 1:06:96. It was the third medal in total for the championships for Ni Riain, with three events still to come. Congratulations Roisin!
