“Limerick: A Different Kind of Energy” has been unveiled by Limerick City and County Council as the captivating theme for this year’s Limerick St. Patrick’s Festival, set to electrify the Treaty County over the festival weekend in March.

The theme encapsulates the city and county’s constant evolution, where past and present combine to generate Limerick’s unique energy.

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Gerald Mitchell says: “From Viking roots to the cosmopolitan present, Limerick’s heritage and tradition pulsate from every corner. For this year’s Limerick St. Patrick’s Festival we are inviting the world to witness a vibrant blend of history and modernism, creating ‘A Different Kind of Energy’ that defines our city and county.”

In Limerick, you can discover the echoes of the 13th Century at King John’s Castle, the majesty of St. Mary’s Cathedral, the elegant Georgian architecture and the artistic treasures housed in Limerick’s museums and galleries. Explore megalithic wonders at Lough Gur, medieval charm in Kilmallock, the heritage of Adare, bustling Newcastle West and the birthplace of Irish coffee in Foynes.

Limerick’s cultural heartbeat, evident in edgy street art and a thriving music scene, boasts a calendar brimming with theatre, film, festivals, and events. Limerick was the first National City of Culture and proudly hosts EVA International, showcasing contemporary art biennially, contributing to an energy found nowhere else on the Emerald Isle.

County Limerick is an adventure playground, inviting exploration with Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails, Curraghchase Forest Park, and the scenic Limerick Greenway offering a 40km path through lush countryside, along with so many other trails, loops, walks and hikes just waiting to be embraced.

As well as celebrating history, Limerick is looking to the future with groundbreaking green initiatives. The potential for offshore wind energy generation on the Shannon Estuary represents a monumental step towards sustainable energy for the region. Under the +CityxChange programme, Limerick is leading the charge as one of just two European cities pioneering innovative energy solutions.

Mayor Mitchell continues: “Through the +CityxChange programme, Limerick is at the forefront of European cities working towards sustainable, innovative energy solutions. This places us on the global map as leaders in shaping a greener future and we are excited to share our dynamic spirit for generations to come.”

The traditional St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, 17 March, and the 52nd Limerick International Band Championship on Monday, 18 March, promise to be highlights of Limerick St. Patrick’s Festival. Both parades will follow the same route as 2023, starting on O’Connell Street before moving on to Henry Street and ending at Arthur’s Quay Park.

The public are invited to enjoy a musical Jamboree at Arthur’s Quay Park following the International Band Championship parade on the Monday.

Additional fringe events surrounding the parade and championship will be announced in the weeks to come.
