Limerick-based singer-songwriter Aaron Hackett has just released his new album entitled ‘public interest’.
‘public interest’ is the second album that the Limerick musician has released. The album is based on experiences that Aaron has had throughout the year.
Aaron, who began a master’s degree in songwriting at the University of Limerick last September, decided that he had learned a lot since September at the end of his second semester. Many of the songs found in ‘public interest’ reflect this and were written as part of Aarons course.
Speaking on the album, Aaron said, “I started writing “public interest” at the beginning of lockdown last year. With everybody stuck in their homes, and the world put on pause, I began questioning how we view celebrities/public figures in society. I know so many incredibly talented artists and musicians that, in my opinion, deserve as much recognition as the big names out there. With the music industry on hold, and the future of gigs completely up in the air, I began to realise that being of high public interest does not mean that the art you produce is any more worthy than the albums/songs created by indie, struggling musicians. The album “public interest” is about my journey to realising this.”
Aaron released the single ‘habitat’ from the album back in February, which gained significant attention. The song reached number 2 in the Irish iTunes charts and also received a considerable amount of radio play throughout Ireland.
Another single from the album, ‘reading on the internet’ was also released in April and reached number 3 on the Irish iTunes Charts.

Aaron added, “In the song ‘habitat’, the first song on the album, I sing “people like us are not a matter of public interest, the type of s**t you don’t read on the internet, tough luck we got caught in the fishing net”. In track 8 ‘hive mind’, I sing “maybe we’re all of a similar kind, and a path is hard to find.” You can really feel as you listen through the album how my idea of ‘fame’ changes – rather than viewing the world as a hierarchy of public figures, I start to believe that we are all the same. This gives me more confidence in the music I create now – I make music to express myself, not for the idea of fame.”
