The proposed Limerick Greenway connection project is to be delivered by Limerick City and County Council’s Active Travel team and is being funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA).

The scheme will see Abbeyfeale town centre connected to the beginning of the Limerick Greenway via Active Travel infrastructure. The Greenway was opened in 2021 and stretches 40 kilometres along the former Limerick to Kerry train line, connecting the three market towns of Abbeyfeale, Newcastle West and Rathkeale.

The project will allow those wishing to use the Greenway to reach Abbeyfeale’s main thoroughfare, availing of local retail offerings in the process.

An in-person consultation event is to be held in Teach na Feile Community Centre, New Street, Abbeyfeale (V94 KP84) on Thursday, November 9th between 4pm and 7pm. This is to offer those who attend the chance to look at high level drawings and proposed options for the project.

A non-statutory public consultation period will begin from Thursday, November 9th and run for a four week period until Thursday, December 7th

The proposals will also be available to view in hard copy form in Abbeyfeale Library, County Hall, Dooradoyle and City Hall, Merchants Quay over the same timeframe.

Senior Engineer with the Active Travel team at Limerick City and County Council, Sean McGlynn, commented: “The rollout of high quality walking and cycling infrastructure is continuing in Limerick at pace with funding support from the NTA. The Limerick Greenway has been transformative for the region since its opening two years ago. The next step for this wonderful amenity is to ensure an entry and exit point is available via an Active Travel facility to the town of Abbeyfeale, where approximately 2,000 people are living. This will help the area economically, with tourists and visitors to the Greenway able to pass through and avail of local facilities. There will also be huge benefits from a social and cultural point of view, allowing even more people the chance to quickly and easily access this scenic facility.”
