Limerick students enjoy three-day CoderDojo camp with IOT industry experts

Over 60 students from schools in Limerick recently attended a three-day coding workshop with industry experts, which provided them with practical training on Internet of Things (IOT) software and technology.

The Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Limerick sponsored event took place at the end of March in LIT and was supported by the Johnson & Johnson European Development Centre (EDC) and the Johnson & Johnson sponsored Automation Centre of Excellence (ACoE).

The aim of the initiative was to provide students with an insight into what exactly IT, IOT and automation mean and how this relates to the industry in a real and practical sense, all done in a fun and learning environment.

Over 25 Vision Care volunteers took part in the three-day Coderdojo Camp

Over 25 Vision Care volunteers took part in the three-day software coding camp, which centered on three main themes:

–       Scratch and Wedo systems

–       Lego Mindstorm and RobotC

–       Siemens LOGO PLC and automation systems

Declan Fagan, Senior Engineering Manager with Vision Care Limerick said the CoderDojo camp was a massive success, “The results from the camp were fantastic. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive from all the participants.”

“We had full attendance across all three days and many students even looked for a fourth day of camp. We were able to open students’ eyes to the possibilities in the technology and software sectors.”

“I would like to thank all of the volunteers, coders, and logistics team – most of whom were doing something like this for the first time – for their part in making the camp a huge success.”

Plans are already in place to run a Summer Camp this year and it is hoped that a similar camp will be held next year, with the capacity to cater for more students and with expanded content.
