As the world becomes increasingly more dependent on the internet and mobile computing to accomplish even the simplest of everyday tasks, the demand for more people working in the computer industry has increased.

Not surprisingly, more learners than ever are opting to work in the area of computing technology, which is a growing industry with many career opportunities. In fact, according to a recent SOLAS report, the Technical Support field has been the largest growth area in employment rates in the Irish IT Sector for the last 5 years.

Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, through its College of FET, Mulgrave Street Campus is helping to meet this demand with its Computer Systems and Networks programme that offers a broad set of modules, which are closely aligned to industry needs. This particular programme is suited to learners who are passionate about technology and problem solving.

Everything from the basics of coding to building and configuring desktop computers is covered on the programme. Learners also have the opportunity to enhance their communication and interpersonal skills by working in groups.

Marcin Lenka from Poland is one such learner on the programme who has been reflecting on his experience at the campus in Limerick City: “What I love about the course is the practical, hands-on experience it offers for computer hardware, and the comprehensive outline that it provides of the internet’s infrastructure.”

Rather than focusing solely on theoretical learning, the Computer Systems and Networks programme at Mulgrave Street Campus offers real-world application allowing learners like Marcin to employ a hands-on approach and delve into the world of computer hardware, which will give him and other learners a greater understanding of what the industry will expect of them.

Marcin also believes it is an excellent foundation for anyone aspiring to be a computer hardware technician: “I would totally recommend this course to anyone interested in technology, as it provides a broad view of the IT field, allowing you to explore various aspects before deciding on a specific path, whether that’s hardware, software, networking, or programming.”

As for Marcin’s experience of the campus, he is really positive about the on-site facilities which have helped him with his studies, including a dedicated library and Learning Hub, as well as a state-of-the-art iMac studio and PC Maintenance Lab. He also spoke about his personal experience on the course: “I’d describe my time as fun, rewarding, and enjoyable. I just love it here.”

If you would like to explore the idea of a career in Computer Systems and Networks, College of FET, Mulgrave Street Campus is hosting an Information Morning on Friday April 12th, from 10am to 1pm.
