Elemental Arts and Culture Festival 2015

Elemental Arts and Culture Festival 2015 takes place from Fri, Sept 11 to the Sept, 13. Now in its fourth year, Elemental has built a reputation for delivering a high-quality, fun, inclusive festival, with community, heritage and the arts in all their guises at its core. Taking place citywide, Elemental will be taking to the streets, shops, cafes, galleries and theatres of Limerick, with a programme offering something for everyone. For the third year running, the Festival’s brochure was designed by Brainstorm Design, a local business headed by Dave Curtin.  The creative director says, “We wanted to create a design that reflected the whimsical and colourful nature of the festival. Alan mentioned he wanted the booklet to “come to life” to give the viewer something memorable, so our response was to truly bring the booklet to life with 3D augmented reality on various pages.” This innovative feature gives people the option to engage and interact with videos, graphics and illustrations, something rarely seen in print design. Last year’s booklet design won the “best programme” award at AOIFE (Association of Irish Festivals & Events).

Film lovers will be well catered for. Screenings to fire up the imagination and the soul will feature, such as the Academy-Award nominated Song of the Sea, by Kilkenny-based animation studio Cartoon Saloon. The joyous Alive Inside, which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, will be screened on Friday afternoon, the 11th September. Sign Painters by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, will screen on Sun, Sept 13, followed by a Q&A with highly-respected sign artist Sean Starr. Both Sean and Kayleigh Starr will also be taking part in the open event and exhibition taking place in Fab Lab, Rutland Street, right through the weekend of Elemental.

Jennifer Allen, elaborated, “We spoke with local sign artist Tom Collins last year about potentially screening Sign Painters at Elemental. Now it’s grown to become a screening, an exhibition, works-in-progress, podcasts, the works! It will bring a whole new perspective and insight to this unique art-form.”

At the heart of Elemental, there is always an educational component delivered in a fun, creative way. This year, that trend runs right through the programme. Alan Hogan, General Manager of Elemental, says: “We’ve selected a range of events which we hope people can really engage with and learn from. Eco-workshops, animation workshops, making a traditional musical instrument – with a twist. Even puppet-making, for adults.”

The full programme of events will be available citywide this week, with teasers, links and the signature artwork, by Jacob Stack, being shared on the Elemental website and social media.
