Medical device manufacturer Filtertek, an Illinois Tool Works (ITW) company, has announced plans to invest almost €2million in an innovative NPD programme at its facility in Newcastle West.

This project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

The announcement by ITW Medical supports the production of next-generation IV check valves and filtration products, the development of new filtration and flow control technology, and adds new moulding and assembly capability to the operations at Newcastle West.

Welcoming the announcement, Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Vardakar TD said, “Filtertek has a long and proud history, stretching back forty years in Limerick. This significant new investment will improve the site’s capabilities and enable the team to produce the next generation of products.

“Filtertek’s four decades in Newcastle West is a testament to the talent and dedication of its staff. I wish them the very best for the future.”

Mayor of the City and Council of Limerick Cllr Daniel Butler has also welcomed the announcement of the investment in next-generation medical device products at ITW Filtertek in Newcastle West, saying, “This investment is a huge vote of confidence in the employees and management team at Filtertek. The medical device manufacturer has been a mainstay for employment in Newcastle West for the past 40 years and the operations were strengthened with its acquisition by ITW Medical in 2007.

“This investment of nearly €2million will allow Filtertek to plan for the future in Newcastle West thus providing security to staff and the wider economy, as we look to bolster and expand investment in the region.

“The staff at IDA Ireland are instrumental in attracting investment into the wider Limerick area as all sectors and bodies must continue to work in partnership to ensure that Limerick is the location of choice for future investment.”

IDA Ireland CEO Martin Shanahan said, “For almost 40 years, Filtertek has provided employment in Newcastle West and has been a part of ITW, a Fortune 250 company since 2007. This investment strongly demonstrates ITW’s confidence and commitment in the Co. Limerick facility. I wish them every success with this significant expansion.”

Gina Powers, Vice President/General Manager of ITW said, “Our facility in Ireland has a long-standing history of world-class manufacturing, innovative product design and serving our customers with excellence. This has been a testament to the level of talent and support available in Ireland.

“We are excited to be working with the IDA to continue investing in Ireland, bringing the power of the ITW Business model and ITW Medical’s unique flow control and filtration capabilities to our OEM customers as we partner to advance healthcare around the world.”

ITW was founded in 1912 and is headquartered in Glenview, Illinois. It is a Fortune 250 company and one of the world’s leading diversified manufacturers of specialised industrial equipment, automotive components, various consumables, and related survive businesses. They have operations in 55 countries and employs approximately 48,000 people globally.

Filtertek has been in operation in Newcastle West for 40 years and was acquired by ITW in 2007. They currently have 67 people employed at the Newcastle West facility.
