Fourth Private Rightsizing Scheme announced by Limerick City and County Council

Fourth Private Rightsizing Scheme includes One and two-bedroom apartments available from November 2023 at Newtown Meadows, Castletroy, Co Limerick

Limerick City and County Council has announced the fourth Private Rightsizing Scheme for homeowners older than 55 who find their dwellings too large for them

The local authority has a new scheme where homeowners older than 55 who find their dwellings too large for them, may request the council to purchase their home in return for a life-long tenancy in a managed Older Persons Scheme.

The Private Rightsizing scheme is entirely voluntary and in partnership with Clann, a division of Clúid Housing that provides dedicated age-friendly homes for people 55 years and older. Clann is committed to providing high-quality housing, enabling people to continue to live independently for as long as possible in their own homes and maintain the connection they have with their community.

The scheme is located at Newtown Meadows, Castletroy and is an exciting new scheme which includes one and two bedroom apartments becoming available in November and December 2023. The scheme in Newtown Meadows is being delivered in phases, phase one apartment block is due for completion in November 2023 and phase two apartment block is due for completion in December 2023.

Launching the latest scheme, Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Cllr. Gerald Mitchell said, “This scheme is the fourth in a number of schemes across Limerick that the Council are working on in partnership with Clann in building age-friendly communities.  The private rightsizing scheme is an entirely voluntary scheme which means that you do not have to move unless you choose to do so. The private rightsizing scheme provides a great opportunity for people to voluntarily “rightsize” to age friendlier accommodation.”

Caroline Curley, Director of Housing in Limerick City and County Council said, “Limerick City and County Council and Clann Housing are committed to empowering residents to live for as long as they possibly can in sustainable, high quality, affordable homes in their own communities.

“Our joint ambition is to expand and improve housing options for people over the age of 55.  Our aim is not just to help people wanting to transfer to a smaller home but to release larger 3 or 4 bedroom properties that are in high demand for families that need them most.  The Council has an informal register of interest of over 100 private households enquiring about rightsizing options. We are confident that there is significant latent demand for private rightsizing schemes”

Aoife Flynn Kennedy, Head of Clann, commented, “Clann is pleased to partner with Limerick City and County Council to deliver these new apartments in Newtown Meadows, Castletroy, Limerick. These new apartments will allow people who have outgrown their current home to rightsize by moving to a more manageable smaller home while staying in their local community, close to their friends and family.

“Clann’s vision is a society where everyone has a great place to live and we are playing a vital role in shaping policy around the delivery of more age-friendly and age-appropriate housing. Clann is already delivering the largest age-friendly social housing development programme in Ireland.”

The closing date for receipt of applications from eligible candidates over the age of 55 is the 27th October 2023 at 5pm.

Candidates who submit a full application with supporting documentation will be assessed to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements. Limerick City and County Council will hold a panel of approved candidates in excess of the number of available properties in case a selected candidate’s circumstances change and are unable to accept the offer.
