Recently, Ardscoil Mhuire’s senior students warmly welcomed Ambassador Gerard McCoy (the Irish Ambassador for Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay) and Defence Forces’ Peacekeeper, Sergeant Joey Burnett. This visit was part of the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Global Ireland Schools Programme, which gave students the invaluable opportunity to learn about Ireland’s engagement overseas. Both guests were incredibly gracious with their time, answering a wide range of questions from Fifth and Sixth Year students of History.

The 2023 Global Ireland Schools Programme took place on Thursday, October 26. Visits by heads of Irish Diplomatic Missions abroad as well as Defence Forces Peacekeepers gave students in schools around the country the opportunity to learn about Ireland’s engagement overseas from the point of view of those on the ground. 229 schools have engaged with the programme since its launch by the Taoiseach in December 2018.

The Irish Defence Forces contributed to the initiative in 2023. This provides an opportunity to educate students and give an insight into the unique role that is carried out by Irish Defence Forces Peacekeepers serving with the UN on overseas missions. Irish Peacekeepers have been at the forefront of advancing the cause of peace worldwide ever since 1960, and Ireland proudly boasts the record of having the longest unbroken overseas service of any nation serving with the UN. The Irish Defence Forces currently have 560 personnel deployed in 11 separate missions globally.

Ardscoil Mhuire’s Senior Cycle students will be carefully considering their next steps in life, under the guidance of their teachers. The presentations by Ambassador McCoy and Sergeant Burnett will certainly have opened their eyes to potential careers as diplomats and

peacekeepers. Bríd Herbert, Principal of Ardscoil Mhuire, thanked both men for bringing their years of expertise to Ardscoil Mhuire, where students were, “fascinated by their insights into how Foreign Policy is practiced.”

Ardscoil Mhuire is a CEIST school whose mission is to ensure that all students are valued and assisted to reach their full academic and personal potential. The staff and students live this mission on a daily basis by their commitment to excellence in all that they do. For Ardscoil Mhuire, the future is bright. School management is currently working closely with the Department of Education on a new and exciting building project. This new school development will allow the school to continue to offer the very best to all students and the community which it serves, now and into the future.
