Greg O Shea Retires

Greg O’Shea rose to fame after winning the 2019 series of Love Island alongside fellow contestant Amber Gill.

Limerick’s Greg O’Shea, Irish Rugby Sevens player and Love Island winner, has retired from rugby at age 26.

The Corbally native announced his retirement on Youtube, on the back of representing Ireland at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics this summer as part of the Irish Rugby Sevens Olympic team.

“I’m at the age of 26 and I’m retiring, which I think is mad to say, but I’ve come to a time in my life where it just feels like the right decision,” O’Shea told his legion of Youtube followers.

He cites better career options in media as the reason for his early departure from the sport.

“With the sevens, we are just not paid enough for it to be a viable, long term career. There are other pathways in life for me to build a career for myself.

“I loved broadcasting and presenting on RTE 2fm. I’ve done a couple of TV shows and podcasts. I get such a buzz from it,” explains O’Shea.

A career in fitness is also a consideration for the Love Island star. Before shifting his focus to Tokyo 2020 preparation, the athlete regularly posted home work-out videos online for followers to join in on.

O’Shea rose to fame after winning the 2019 series of Love Island alongside fellow contestant Amber Gill. Despite the intense media coverage that followed, the Limerick man remained focused on his Olympic ambitions with the Irish Rugby Sevens team.

The squad’s Olympic campaign in Tokyo came to an end against Kenya in a battle for ninth place.

Despite the disappointing loss, O’Shea looks back on his overall career with pride.

“I went to Tokyo 2020 and it was a dream come true,” admits O’Shea.

“I’ve achieved everything I wanted to in my rugby career. I’ve been to a Rugby World Cup, a World Tour and now I’ve been to the Olympics.” The best of luck Greg from all at I Love Limerick. We wish you every success in the world!
