With the hectic Christmas shopping season now upon us, why not take time out to revisit shopping trips of yesteryear at Limerick Museum.

From toys at Boyd’s to trinkets from Todd’s, Let’s go Shopping! A history of retail in Limerick, is a nostalgic and colourful trip through the retail history of Limerick city.

Curated by Dr Zara Power, Assistant Curator of Limerick Museum, the exhibition is a treasure trove of times gone by.

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Gerald Mitchell, performed the official opening of the exhibition, saying: “For many in Limerick and its surrounding environs, this time of year conjures memories of shopping trips to Limerick City. The excitement of travelling into the city centre and the ‘world of goods’ that awaited – bustling streets and laneways lined with shops – tantalising window displays to tempt – and the treat of going for a bite to eat in one of the city’s eateries. Limerick Museum’s Let’s go Shopping! exhibition is a trip down memory lane – a celebration of ‘getting the messages’, ‘only having a look’ and ‘spending a few bob’.”

Dr Matthew Potter, Curator of Limerick Museum said: “I want to thank my colleague Dr Zara Power for curating  this exhibition which tells the story of shopping in Limerick from the great department stores (originally known as monster houses) to the small corner shops and kiosks. We must not forget that Limerick’s rich retailing history is 250 years old, dating back to the birth of modern shops in the Georgian era.”

Also at Limerick Museum, The Art of the Stitch: The Enduring Legacy of Maude Kearney, continues until 25 January 2024.

Limerick Museum is situated in the Old Franciscan Friary on Henry Street, next door to Dunnes Stores.

The Museum is open to the public Monday to Friday 10.00am to 5.00pm; Saturday 10.00am-1.00pm and 2.00pm to 5.00pm.

Admission is FREE.
