Significant progress on Hyde Road Active Travel Scheme Works
85 per cent of construction on Hyde Road Active Travel Scheme is expected to be finished before the end of the third Quesrter of 2023
Limerick City & County Council’s Active Travel team continues to make significant progress on construction of the Hyde Road Active Travel Scheme
Works are estimated to be 85 per cent complete and are expected to be finished before the end Q3 of 2023.
The Scheme aims to provide high-quality cycle and pedestrian facilities connecting Childers Road with Lower Carey’s Road, while also creating traffic calming measures and an improved road environment for local residents.
The ongoing works include provision for segregated cycle facilities, the upgrading of footpaths, drop-curbs and tactile paving to assist the visually impaired.
Tabletop ramps and new road markings are also included in the project, which is being constructed by Precision Construction Limited.
Progress is also being made on the planned Childers Road multi-orbital corridor between the junction of Ballinacurra Road and Roxboro roundabout, with a construction contract expected to be awarded imminently and works beginning later on in the year.
Both projects will see significant progress in the expansion of the overall network in the Limerick City West metropolitan area.
Director of Service for Transportation and Mobility at Limerick City and County Council, Brian Kennedy said, “We’re excited that work on this really critical Scheme on the Hyde Road is approaching its final stages. The overall aim of the project is to reduce traffic speed and provide improved pedestrian connectivity along with segregated cycle facilities along the entire length of the road. The work will ensure the movement and safety of vulnerable road users is prioritized, in line with regional, local and national policy.”
Senior Engineer with Limerick City and County Council’s Active Travel team, Sean McGlynn, commented, “We look forward to the Hyde Road Scheme coming to completion as part of the high quality Active Travel connectivity between Dooradoyle and the city centre. The construction of the Childers Road works between the Ballinacurra Road Junction and the Roxboro Roundabout will also see the network connectivity on the West side of the city continue to make progress.”
The projects are being delivered by Limerick City and County Council’s Active Travel team and is being funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA).
The Hyde Road Active Travel Scheme has been developed with consideration of the Limerick Development Plan 2022-2028 and is contained in the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy 2040.
