The jazz/soul-inspired Limerick songstress, JaYne shares her first solo album, ‘Pass the Test’ getting its title from a drive to complete something of her own
‘Charlie’ is A dreamy track with sweeping guitars, hazy vocals and subtle synths carried by a well-crafted lyric that personifies cocaine.
The single paints a picture of the recreational cocaine use which has become a socially acceptable part of the weekend for many.
Speaking about the track, JaYne said, “Addiction is kinda like an abusive partner and so I wrote around the idea. So many people in this country are stuck on loop in this awful relationship with coke. It’s low key because for the other 5 days in the week it’s “normal life” but Charlie is a bad boyfriend and a lot of people are struggling with him more than they would like to admit”.
The track has a sonic echo of 70s jazz fusion band Steely Dan, an influence often cited by the Limerick songwriter while retaining all the sensibility of a current pop track.
Written and recorded over two years, JaYne’s solo album, ‘Pass the Test’, gets its title from a drive to complete something of her own, JaYne began releasing as a solo artist in 2021 having previously worked as a topliner and session singer in the U.K.
“I wrote the songs at a time when I was doing a deep dive on my past, trying to heal some stuff that was really holding me back. I have been writing songs my whole life, a solo album was a test I needed to pass. I have experimented with different styles over the years, I went through an alt-pop phase, but jazz harmony and chord progressions always feel like home,” said JaYne.
The singer manages to simultaneously display strength and fragility within both her vocal tone and writing. Her voice has many shades to it, as do the subject matter of her songs, influences such as Steely Dan and Queen can be heard in tracks like ‘Charlie’ and ‘Bad Sign’ which were co-written with Conor Broderick (keys).
The singer’s debut solo album was released on May 19.
