Limerick Bus Eireann workers undertake a Spring Clean to help tackle litter problem

Limerick Bus Eireann workers are playing their part in tackling Ireland’s litter problem to help fight climate change.

Last week, ten Bus Eireann workers undertook a Spring Clean at Roxboro Depot surrounds and Roxboro Road, focusing on litter blackspots. The team were kitted out with hi-viz jackets, armed with litter pickers, gloves and bags. They gathered several bags of litter, which were collected at Roxboro Depot surrounds.

The National Spring Clean initiative, which has taken place for the past 23 years, has seen participants volunteer over 12 million hours of their time to remove 42,000 tonnes of litter across the country, keeping Ireland clean.

Emer Bambrick, Bus Éireann Sustainability Senior Manager said, “We are extremely proud to partner up with An Taisce for the National Spring Clean campaign this year. The theme of the National Spring Clean is community pride and Bus Éireann, Limerick has come together as a team with one purpose to keep our local community clean and green”.

According to Emlyn Cullen, National Spring Clean Manager, the Spring Clean has always been a community initiative as much as an anti-litter campaign.

“We are delighted to have Bus Éireann on board this year. I would like to thank everyone who is supporting the National Spring Clean campaign. All your help and support is much appreciated in keeping our communities clean and tidy. These collective efforts bring people together and create tremendous social capital.”

Bus Éireann operates the Limerick City bus service and in 2019 carried four million passengers. A recent report by KPMG calculates Bus Éireann’s value to Limerick city at €23 million.

The company employs 150 people who live in Limerick and transports 5,200 students on school transport in the county each school day.
