With students being bussed in from all over the county to pick up a few bargains business was brisk with one team from Laurel Hill selling out by lunchtime. There was a wonderful atmosphere, costumed traders, treats aplenty all enhanced by the carol singers from St Michael’s National School.
As well as the brisk sales, thanks to the sponsorship of Markets Alive Support Team (MAST) and Permanent TSB, there was €1,000 in prize money up for grabs in the categories of innovation, best display, team spirit and best individual. The winners were from Castletroy College, Scoil Pol in Kilfinane and Scarrif Community College.
Speaking at the event, Head of Local Enterprise at the Local Enterprise Office Limerick, Bernie Moloney, thanked all the teachers for the support they provide to their students and said: “Looking around at the group of business focused young people here today, there is no doubt that the future of entrepreneurship in Ireland looks very bright indeed”.
David Fitzgerald of the Milk Market said: “It was great to see so many young entrepreneurs getting their first experience of market trading. I was very impressed by the quality of the stalls and hope to see them return to us time and time again in the future”.
Garry Lowe of Whizzkids Training coordinates the Student Enterprise Programme said: “This is the second year we ran the Student Christmas Market and had double the number of entries. We are trying to instil
an entrepreneurial culture and this will provide these students with invaluable experience in this wonderful facility at the heart of Limerick city. My thanks to Dave and his team at the Milk Market for hosting this great event.”
The next leg of the Local Enterprise Office Student Enterprise Programme takes place on March 29, 2017 – the Limerick City and County Final.
