Discussed in the opening episode of I Love Limerick’s Podcast show was the recent events that took place in Limerick last week. We chatted about the upcoming Leon’s Lifeline cooking demo with celebrity chef Rachel Allen, at The Strand Hotel, September 25, at 6.30 pm. The night in the Strand will kick off with a wine reception where audience members can place bids on some amazing prizes in our silent auction. Tickets are 25 euro and all proceeds go towards Leon’s lifeline.

This event is part of the Leon’s Lifeline fundraising campaign, to send Leon O’Connor to Russia for stem cell therapy to help his battle with multiple sclerosis. The therapy costs 70,000 euros and so far over 40,900 euros has been raised.

This was followed by another event that’s taking place all over Limerick. We discussed, Limerick Going for Gold Tidy Towns grand finale. Judging has been completed in the Limerick Going for Gold Tidy Towns Category with six groups selected as wildcards to compete in the grand final. The six groups to go forward consist of Ardpatrick Tidy Towns, Croom Development Association, Galbally Tidy Towns, Hospital Tidy Towns, Kilmeedy Community Development Group and Newcastle West Tidy Towns.

There is always to opportunity for more places to join as Limericks Live 95’s FM are holding a public vote on their Today Program. In the public vote are Ballyhahill Development Association, Kilcornan Tidy Towns, Kilfinane Tidy Towns, Rathkeale Tidy Towns, and Bruree/Rockhill Tidy Towns.

The Tidy Towns Grand Final takes place in the Strand Hotel, Limerick on 8 October 2019. During the night there will be six categories. Over €60,000 will be distributed over six Categories in this year’s competition. 

They also talked about, The Irish branch of Parents for Future Tuistí don Todhchaí. There are calling upon everyone: old, young and in-between, to come out in support of our young people at the next big Global Climate Strike on Friday, September 20. The Global Climate Strike at locations all around the world. The Limerick location and starting point will be Arthur’s Quay Park at 1 pm.

Speaking on climate change, they also discussed how sustainable and vintage clothing has seen an uproar here in Limerick due to the many festivals, such as Electric Picnic. Although the festival takes place in Stradbally Co.Laois, the impact can be felt down here in our own city, with the increase in sales for vintage clothing, a popular trend in festival fashion. 

John Coughlan, the owner of Limericks longest-running vintage shop ‘The Edge Clothing’ says, “over the last few years the number of summer festivals has increased yearly and this has resulted in an increase in sales especially for May, June, and late August.” Grace Collier, who runs the popular vintage shop ‘Spice’ also says that Electric Picnic and other festivals are the highlight of her calendar year and says that her entire year revolves around prepping for this busy time.

Next up they discussed the upcoming Inaugural Latin American Festival, Viva La Vida. The Festival is free and will showcase Latin American culture through a positive array of activities that are planned for this two-day festival that will take place on October 25 and 26 at the Central Buildings Community Centre on O’Connell Street in Limerick City.

They also talked about Rachel McGill, a 21-year old Limerick native and student at the National Film School in Dublin is set to compete in the finale of the Talent Nation talent showcase in the Twenty Two in Dublin on Wednesday, October 2. The competition has been running online for the past eight weeks in association with FM104 and has relied on both public vote and a judging panel.

The competition has been shortlisted to 18 finalists from 9 separate categories and the winner will walk away with €10,000. Rachel is competing in the Film and Tv category, along with Anna Czarska from Kildare.

Well, another extremely talented artist they discussed was Irish-language poet Dr. Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh. Dr. Ní Ghearbhuigh is the winner of the Michael Hartnett Poetry Award 2019 with her collection Tost Agus Allagar, published by Coiscéim. They describe Tost Agus Allagar as a wonderful collection in which the poet “speaks from the heart” of love, language, and dislocation.

The award will be presented to Dr. Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh at the opening of Éigse Michael Hartnett on Thursday, October 3, at 8 pm in Newcastle West Library. Éigse Michael Hartnett Literary and Arts Festival takes place between the 3 – 5 October at various locations around Newcastle West. 

They also talked about Limerick-born writer Michael McGrath’s debut collection of short stories publishes on Friday, September 20, at 7.30 pm at Nelly’s Café, Nicholas Street, Limerick. The collection will be launched by the actor, director, and playwright Myles Breen. The collection titled All About Town consists of ten short stories, all set in Limerick City and explores a range of genres. The book All About Town is published by the Limerick Writers’ Centre under their community publishing program.

Another important topic on climate change they discussed was Limerick Chamber calls for councilors to back O’Connell Street development plans. Limerick Chamber has unequivocally called for metropolitan area Public Representatives to vote in approval of the O’Connell Street Development plans and deliver the much-needed investment into the City’s main street. Dee Ryan, Chamber Chief Executive Officer, said, “Limerick Business, across all sectors, urgently need this investment in our urban center and we call on Metropolitan Councillors to vote in approval of the plans. 

Another event happening in limerick is the series of  Limerick laneways Project behind the main streets in Limerick that are ready to be discovered. As part of Limerick City and County Council’s EU project +CityxChange (Positive City Exchange), we are hoping to create a new community to drive innovation!

This is a community of individuals, groups, businesses, and agencies who are looking at ways to develop smarter cities that are open and accessible for all. We are all about the positives. Working together to solve problems or to create a new vision. The overarching aim is to develop a series of demonstration projects on how to become a smart positive energy city for altogether, through citizen engagement.

It is taking place between 11 am and 1 pm at the Citizen’s Observatory at Fab Lab Limerick, 6-7 Rutland Street, Limerick. Members of the public, groups and other companies and organizations are invited to attend.

They also touched on Limerick City Tidy Towns. They have presented their monthly award for September 2019 to Pat O’Connor & Son Butchers for their beautifully restored new store at 62 William Street, which has this month also celebrated its official opening. Maura O’Neill of Limerick Tidy Towns said, “Given how important our Georgian heritage is to Limerick, it is wonderful to see a building such as this being restored and renovated so beautifully and sympathetically in the heart of the city center, not just the shop at street level but also at all upper levels.

If you wish to volunteer with Limerick City Tidy Towns, they meet every Sunday morning at 11 am at the corner of Thomas Street and O’Connell Street, and on Wednesday evenings at 6 pm outside the White House during summer months.

Another great story for limerick was The Winners of Limerick Businesswoman of the Year to compete in National Business competition.

Five women based in Limerick companies will compete in this year’s Network Ireland Business Woman of the Year Awards which takes place in Cork on September 27. Hannah Wrixon (Get the Shifts), Olivia Buckley (Olivia Buckley International), Patricia Roberts (No. 1 Pery Square), Emma Langford (Singer/Songwriter) and Petrina Hayes (The Savoy Collection) will be among the women competing for national recognition. Each of them won their respective category at the regional finals in May.

Last week, all finalists participated in interviews hosted at AIB in Molesworth Street, Dublin. The overall winners will be announced on September 27 at a Gala Ball in Celtic Ross Hotel, Cork. Catriona O’Donoghue, President of Network Ireland Limerick, said, “We wish all our finalists the very best of luck at the nationals. The awards provide a great opportunity to recognize their achievements, ambition, and professionalism. They are already winners in our eyes for stepping up and putting themselves out there. Fingers crossed for another Limerick title.”

And finally, they discussed the MIC Alumni Reunion 2019. Mary Immaculate College (MIC), Limerick is inviting its past students back to the College on Saturday, October 5 for the annual Alumni Reunion. This year the College will celebrate those who graduated in 1949, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014.

Taking place at MIC (South Circular Road, Limerick) from 2.30 pm to 5.00 pm, the Alumni Reunion is the College’s largest event for graduates and a great opportunity to reminisce with former classmates and network with other Alumni. As the College has undergone significant expansion and development over the years and now counts a student population of over 5,000, the Alumni Reunion will give graduates the opportunity to tour the campus to see the many changes that have taken place since they graduated
