A group of students from St Patrick’s Girls’ School in Limerick City launched their own published book of short stories in Limerick’s Granary Library this week. Entitled ‘A Mash of Memories’ – this was a project funded by Children’s Books Ireland which gave primary school children the opportunity to work with and learn from a published children’s author and to write, project-manage, design and publish their own fiction. Facilitated by Associate Vice President, educator and novelist Professor Sarah Moore (Fitzgerald) from UL, this was a unique collaboration, bringing together primary educators (from St Patrick’s Girls’ School); University expertise (from the University of Limerick); Librarian support (from Limerick City & County Library service) and Funding for Literacy and Writing Development (from Children’s Books Ireland).
Speaking at the launch, Sarah Moore Fitzgerald talked about the importance of creativity and creative writing in all our lives and at all stages of the education process. The student authors, all from 6th class, read extracts from their work and talked about how motivating it has been to see their work grow from small ideas to the printed word. Deputy Mayor Gerald Mitchell praised the group for the high quality of the publication and said that this project fits well in a city rich with creative activity and potential. Also speaking at the launch was James Lawlor of Narrative 4, which has recently set up its international office in Limerick and uses storytelling to build empathy throughout communities.
A Mash of Memories: Stories from The St Patrick’s School Writing Club is now available and can be borrowed from Limerick City & County Library.
