Mill Road Active Travel infrastructure construction to begin this November

Construction is to begin on Active Travel infrastructure along the Mill Road in Corbally this November 2023
The project will consist of an off-road shared pedestrian/cycle facility from the junction of Corbally Road to the River Shannon viewing area.
The Scheme is approximately 1.4km in length and will include traffic calming measures such as raised pedestrian crossings.
The works are to begin in the coming weeks and are expected to take eighteen months to complete.

Works are anticipated to run from Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm and on occasional Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.
A traffic management system will be in place for the duration of the works. This may include temporary traffic lights, flagmen etc and will be subject to the specific requirements of the works area.
Senior Engineer with the Active Travel team, Sean McGlynn, commented, “The Mill Road is seen as a key connector to primary and secondary Active Travel routes in the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy, which sets out the framework for local transport policy. It is going to be an important piece of infrastructure for those living in the area and it is exciting to see it going to construction.
He continued, “This project will ultimately allow people living in the vicinity of the Mill Road to walk or cycle to school or work in a safer manner when it’s completed. We appreciate the patience required of local residents in the next number of months and their cooperation. In the long term, the Scheme will be a key connector and deliver significant benefits to the area, in tandem with the Corbally Road Safe Routes To School Scheme, which recently received planning permission.”
The project received an allocation of €800,000 in funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) in 2023, having been allocated just over €1 million in 2022.
The works were approved by Councillors via a Part 8 planning application in September 2021, following a statutory public consultation process.
