An old school building in Montpelier has been at the centre of the community since 1898. It served as a primary school until the 1960s and later as an extension to the parish oratory. However, in recent years, it has fallen into some disrepair.

A new committee has recently been formed to redevelop the old school into a modern community centre for the Montpelier O Briensbridge community. Committee Chairperson, Paul Slattery, says, “We hope that the old school will become a centre of community life once more. We want to honour the great work that has been done before us and use this Montpelier O Briensbridge Community space to bring people together again.”

It is envisaged that the Montpelier O Briensbridge Community centre will support social activities for the young and old. Dance and music classes, Men’s Shed, 45-drives, coffee mornings and other activities have already been suggested.

O’Briensbridge-Montpelier is a census town in Ireland, comprising the villages of O’Briensbridge in County Clare and Montpelier in County Limerick which face each other across the River Shannon.

This coming St. Patrick’s weekend marks the first community centre fundraiser, The Triple Peak Challenge. On Friday and Saturday, March 18 & 19, the committee is inviting the public to climb three local peaks with them in two days – Moylussa, Keeper Hill and the 12 O’Clock Hills.

On March 18, the group will meet at 8 am at Ballycuggaran Car Park to climb Moylussa followed by the 12 O’Clock Hills at 3 pm.

The next day, people are asked to gather at Doonane Car Park at 9 am to climb Keeper Hill.

This is a family-friendly event so why not take advantage of the long weekend and get out in the great outdoors. All information can be found on the “Montpelier O’Briensbridge Community Centre” Facebook Page.

Climb all three peaks for a donation of €35, climb two for €30 or one for €20.

If you can’t make the hikes, you can still donate to the cause HERE
