Limerick City and County Council planners have approved the application for a multi-million euro healthcare development on the northside of the city

Limerick City and County Council planners have approved the application for a multi-million euro healthcare development on the northside of the city, a step forward in the healthcare infrastructure for Limerick and the mid-west region.

The approved project will see a €40 million UPMC hospital built on Moyross Avenue and is expected to further boost the economy by creating 230 jobs with some 200 jobs expected to be created for the construction of the medical campus.

UPMC, a global, academic medical provider had received conditional planning for the construction of a private day hospital and medical facility, the subsequent phases of the development will include the construction of 115 homes and a nursing home operated by Mowlam Healthcare.

The second phase, estimated at €20 million, will feature a three-storey nursing home, employing an additional 90 full-time and part-time staff, and the plans to construct the residential units made up of houses and apartments show a promising investment in Limerick’s northside.

In an open joint-letter to Limerick City and County Council in support of the application, Dee Ryan, Limerick Chamber Chief Exectutive, and Sean Golden, Limerick Chamber Chief Economist said the development “not only promises to bolster health infrastructure in Limerick and the Mid-West, but it will also promote investment in an area which has lacked investment in the past”.

The conditional approval includes 20 conditions outlined in the notification of the decision, including adequate carpool parking, bike shelters, and will be constructed in line with the Workplace Travel Plan.

The letter from the Limerick Chamber explains as Limerick, the Mid West, and Ireland’s population grows, Healthcare infrastructure is of “critical importance”. They said, “Providing additional healthcare facilities, on top of what is already planned, will ensure we can efficiently deal with the pent-up demand within the system and adequately plan for future population growth.”
