Patrickswell National School Parents Association have launched the 5km Patrickswell Fun Run | Walk on Sunday the 14th of April 2024 in memory of Mr. Nestor, a great friend, colleague, teacher, and mentor.

The run | walk will start and finish at Patrickswell National School. We are hoping to raise funds for a new ASD classroom opening in September 2024 in Patrickswell National School.

Mr Nestor’s colleagues have spoken highly of him as a person whose “enthusiasm for teaching extended beyond the classroom”.

They said, “John’s enthusiasm for teaching extended beyond the classroom, engaging children with his famous quizzes that inspired them to gain knowledge through reading, sparking their curiosity while also having fun. Indeed, John’s classroom had the best library which John himself gathered over the years usually purchasing books during his summer holidays while visiting so many bookshops.

His deep love for nature was always evident with his introduction of a selection of bird feeders strategically placed around the school grounds bringing joy to feathered friends, children, and adults alike”. Through his dedication to the Green Flag programme, John inspired a generation to care for our planet with the same fervor and respect as he himself held. Thanks to a heart full of warmth, the staff room before school every morning was the place to be, where John would regale us with his wonderful stories and set us up for the day with his infectious sense of humour ”

The group is hoping to raise funds for an ASD classroom in Patrickswell National School, the organisers saying, “As you know Mainstream classes aren’t always the best setting for an Autistic Child. Depending on the needs of the child, some students may be able to attend an ASD class within a mainstream school which will allow them to integrate into a mainstream school community when they are able to.”

Patrickswell National School is a Catholic Co-educational primary school that is part of the Deis Rural scheme. The school has approximately 130 pupils and hugely multicultural enrolment. They have five classroom teachers, 4 SEN teachers, 4 SNAs, 1 part-time EAL teacher, a secretary, and a caretaker. They are opening their 1st Special Class for Autistic pupils in September 2024.

On the day attendees can expect a Bake Sale with Teresa Griffin, MC DJ Bomba, Raffles & Prizes, and Music.
