Rathkeale, County Limerick, recognises that retirement and under employment can bring about significant changes in a man’s life, including the end of a steady work routine, income stream, and social interactions. It can also lead to a loss of professional identity and fewer routine health and fitness activities.

To help men navigate these changes, the Rathkeale Men’s Shed has been established as a community where men can connect, share, learn, grow, and help others in a safe, relaxing, and supportive environment. The members enjoy physical, creative, educational, and volunteering activities, as well as outings and Icebreakers where guests introduce ideas.

“We have already enjoyed a tour of Adare Castle, professionally led chair yoga, lots of tea and joined the Irish Men’s Shed Association,” said David Lamont, the founding chairperson. “We are now welcoming new members, are fleshing out the 2024 calendar, introducing ourselves to other community organisations, and even have plans to construct our own Meeting Centre.”

At the Shed’s inaugural meeting on December 14th, 2023, a Constitution was adopted, and the 2024 Executive Committee was elected. The Committee includes David Lamont (Chairperson), Neily Hogan (Treasurer), Noel White (Secretary), Valerie Foley (Activity Director), Denis Robinson (Rathkeale Together Project Coordinator), John Egan (Committee Member), and John O’Connor (Committee Member).

The Shed was established by Rathkeale Together and is open to all men over the age of 18. Members get together on Thursdays at 11 am in the Parish Hall on Lower Main Street and at other arranged times. Members donate €50 per year, organise activities, share chores, and rotate governance roles. Participants in projects and on trips share related expenses.

“This Shed is more than just a gathering place; it’s a catalyst for positive change initiated by Denis Robinson and our team,” said Gordon Milne, chairperson of Rathkeale Together. “Their camaraderie, mutual respect and inclusive environment makes Rathkeale a better place to be.”

The Shed’s host, Rathkeale Together, is a community-based project that promotes cohesion and leadership among the people of Rathkeale. The project is an ecumenical activity of the Methodist, Church of Ireland and Catholic Churches and is overseen by West Limerick Resources.
