St. Michaels Rowing Club, located on O’Callaghan Strand, Limerick held their annual SMRC Urban Run on the 5th of October 2014.
The run took place to celebrate health, community and the spirit of competition. This is the second year of the AAI Permitted SMRC Urban Run.
The event is being organised in partnership with Limerick County Club AC and all athletes, families and those who run simply for the fun of it are invited to join in on the day.
This year the charity partner for the event is Corbett Suicide Prevention Patrol (CSPP). CSPP is a Limerick based patrol charity. Volunteers walk between the four bridges in the city and keep their eyes on the river. The patrol’s main aim is to identify and provide support to those who may be in distress and/or contemplating suicide.
Proceeds raised from the Urban Run will benefit CSPP which is a 100% volunteer group, meaning that no one is paid and they depend entirely on the support of the public.
The Urban Run will have two separate routes, a 5k route and a 10k route. Both routes are flat as well as scenic meaning that anyone can compete, no matter what your ability.
10k Description – The route starts at the top of O’Callaghan Strand and continues across to the NCR loop, up to the Lr. Shelbourne Junction. It crosses over into Clanmorris and follows the road to the exit out onto O’Callaghan Strand. Turn right and head towards the Bridge Underpass, which leads out onto the Bank Path. It continues up to Clonmacken Roundabout and returns back in the Bus Lane to the traffic light junction and turns left. Take a right at the next roundabout and follow the road up to finish line outside the SMRC Clubhouse.
5k Description – The route starts near the clubhouse and continues up to the NCR junction, crossing over to ncr and takes the first left into Westfields Park and then another left whereby a full loop of the Park is completed before exiting at the entrance point. Continue to NCR junction and take a left, continuing along the NCR until the Lr. Shelbourne Junction and turn right down the Salesian Hill. Follow the road to the left off the Roundabout, onto the finish line outside the Clubhouse.
There was a number of prizes on the day with a prize fund of €1,000.
