The UL Sports Kids Run for Fun, Irelands largest single mass participation event, for children took place in the city on the eve of the Great Limerick Run. It got underway on the grounds of the University of Limerick on Saturday May 3, prior to the big race event in the city the following day. This is the second year of this event and numbers participating were capped at 2,000 children aged between 4 and 12. The four race distances in the UL Sports Kids Run for Fun races are designed to encourage children from all sections of society to participate in sport and healthy activity. Meanwhile, coordinator of the Limerick Sports Partnership, Phelim Macken commented: “The training sessions at local primary schools gave children the advice and motivation needed to encourage them to participate in the UL Sports Kids Run for Fun. We also hope that the sessions and the event itself will help promote physical activity on a wider level throughout the year.”
