“Alice wishes her life was completely different. She wakes up one morning to find that her life is different. In fact, it’s so different that all she wants to do is get back to normality. But how does she do that? A comedy about family, string theory and breakfast.”

County Limerick Youth Theatre (CoLYT) presents Variations by Katie Hims as part of The National Theatre Connections Festival 2022. NT Connections gives youth theatres from across Britain and Ireland the opportunity to perform newly commissioned plays written specifically for teenagers. This is the first year that CoLYT has taken part in NT Connections, in fact this is the first year that a company from Munster has taken part!

Fifteen young artists aged 14 to 19 from across County Limerick will perform Katie Hims’ beautiful, frenetic, and hilarious play Variations at Friars Gate Theatre, Kilmallock from Sunday, April 3 and Monday, April 4. On April 29th they will transfer Variations to The Lyric, Belfast for their Partner Theatre performance. This will give members from CoLYT the chance to meet and perform alongside young artists from all over Ireland.

Artistic Director Shane Hickey-O’Mara sums up the experience:

“The members of County Limerick Youth Theatre, like all young people, have had a particularly difficult two years. They’ve struggled to stay connected through the pandemic, as well as the added pressures of trying to keep vulnerable friends and family safe, navigating state exams in unknowing times, and dealing with the everyday challenges of being a teenager today. Variations at Friars Gate Theatre have given the young artists a huge boost in confidence and they’re relishing the chance to perform side by side with their friends on the Friar’s Gate stage! NT Connections has been such a gift and we really hope that the community comes out to support them. All of us in CoLYT couldn’t be prouder of the team and we can’t wait to see them back on stage doing what they do best: making people smile!”

Directed by Shane Hickey-O’Mara, Designed by Marcella Byrnes and Stage Managed by Eloise Hickey, Variations at Friars Gate Theatre, Kilmallock runs for three performances only on April 3rd (6pm & 8pm) and April 4th (8pm). To book tickets please email [email protected] or phone 063-98727.
