Aisling Sexton from Bruree, Co Limerick has been announced as the Family Carers Ireland ‘Limerick Netwatch Family Carer of the Year 2023.’

Independent judges selected the Family Carers Ireland ‘Limerick County Finalist for Limerick Carer of the Year 2023’ and the Limerick presentation took place on Wednesday, November 8th at Radisson Hotel Limerick. Mayor Gerard Mitchell presented the Limerick ‘Netwatch Family Carer of the Year 2023’ award to Aisling.

Aisling has been caring for her Mam for the past three years as she had an underlying illness and she then ended up with a very serious lung condition following the pandemic, even though Aisling is currently studying for her Leaving Cert in 2024, taking 6 Higher level subjects.

Aislings’ mother Mary spent months in intensive care, but after five months she relearned all her motor skills- walking, talking and she is now being cared for at home since June 2022.

Her mother’s medical condition requires life-long use of oxygen as she has very poor lung function. She requires a lung transplant for life to improve and before being put on a transplant list certain changes needed to be made to her home.

Aisling took on the fundraising task last year in 2022, to raise €30,000 in funding to pay for these adaptations as well as medical expenses for her mam. Aisling achieved this within the year and managed to fundraise €31,000.

Aisling Sexton will now be entered into the FCI Regional Finals on Wednesday, November 15 where 26 County Finalist nominations will be judged. The four regional finalists selected will attend the National ceremony in Dublin and from these four Regional recipients, one overall person will be announced the ‘Netwatch Family Carer of the Year 2023’ on Thursday, November 30 at the Westin Hotel, Dublin and this event will be hosted by Miriam O Callaghan.
