Cllr Francis Foley who was Limerick’s Mayor at the time of the announcement issued a statement saying, “On behalf of the entire Limerick community, I extend my warmest congratulations to Claire on her well-deserved selection for the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia.

“Claire’s journey from the GAA and camogie fields of West Limerick to representing our country on the international stage is nothing short of inspiring.”

The World Cup kicks off on August 20, 2023, when the Republic of Ireland will take on one of the host nations, Australia in what will be the second game of the tournament.

The Limerick Ladies Gaelic Football team shared their congratulations on Twitter, saying, “A true inspiring hero for all our girls to look up to. We are thrilled for you Claire & we wish you the best of luck. Everyone in Limerick LGFA will be shouting you & the Irish Team on.”

Cllr Francis Foley said it is “remarkable” to think that O’Riordan began her sporting career representing Limerick at county level in GAA and camogie.

“The transition to football and subsequent rise to prominence is a testament to Claire’s exceptional talent and unwavering dedication,” He said.

Continuing “From the early days with Wexford Youths in the Irish Women’s National League, to professional contracts with MSV Duisburg in the German Frauen-Bundesliga and now Celtic in August 2022, Claire has solidified her rightful place among the finest players in the game.

“Claire’s selection for the Women’s World Cup is a testament to her hard work, perseverance, and immense talent.”

He noted that as the team embark on the prestigious tournament “the entire city and county of Limerick stands united in support of our native daughter”.

The ex-mayor noted Claire has become a role model for aspiring athletes in the Limerick community, “proving that with determination and dedication, dreams can become a reality”.

He concluded, “On behalf of the citizens of Limerick, I wish Claire, Vera Pauw and the entire squad the best of luck in the Women’s World Cup. May you seize every opportunity, display your incredible skills, and bring pride and glory to our city and our nation. We will be cheering you on every step of the way.”
