‘Continuation’, an exhibition by a collection of Limerick painters, will be displayed at The Peoples’ Museum of Limerick until October 7.

Continuation brings together new work by nine Limerick-based artists, who have formed connections through art over the past two decades. These artists are Patrick Corcoran, Martin Finnin, Gillian Kenny Shinnors, Melanie O’ Rourke, Lorraine Murphy, Brian Mc Mahon, Tom Prendergast, Ciarán Power and John Shinnors.

Continuation features the work of artists from different generations, paying homage to the group shows of Limerick’s past, from Sean Keating’s exhibitions in the 1930s to the LSAD graduate shows of the past few years.

Collectively, the group demonstrates the great breadth and variety of stylistic approaches to contemporary Irish painting.

The works on show were created during the Covid-19 pandemic, a period of great uncertainty when creativity flourished. Pieces from the exhibition will visualise the enormous upheaval of the past two years.

The exhibition is open to the public, free of charge, Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, as well as from 12 pm to 4 pm on Sunday until October 7.

On Thursday, September 9, Continuation was launched at The Peoples Museum of Limerick, with Oonagh Keogh of the Irish Chamber Orchestra performing three short works. Two days later on September 11, participating artists gave talks on their contributions to the exhibition.

The University of Limerick Postgraduate Society is also involved in Continuation, providing sponsorship towards running costs and a team of volunteers to work at both events.

Commenting on the exhibition, contributing artist Martin Finnin said, “A big thank you to Gillian Kenny Shinnors and Melanie O’ Rourke who are not only exhibiting some really excellent pieces in this show but organised the whole thing.

“It looks like a great group of painters – some I don’t know and some I have admired for years. The People’s Museum of Limerick is a great venue, a real old gem of a building, so all you art lovers, call in.”
