The Gaynor Cup is the girls’ counterpart to the famous Kennedy Cup and is one of the biggest weeks of the year. It kicked off on Tuesday, June 7 with 25 U14 teams from around the country making their way to Limerick to participate.

On the opening day of the cup, The Limerick Desmond team began their campaign in a match against the Cork League, defeating them with a 4-0 score. Mayo earned a 2-0 victory over Clare, Donegal earned a 3-0 victory over neighbours Inishowen and Carlow earned a 3-1 defeat to Sligo.

On Wednesday, June 8th Limerick Desmond edged past the Kerry League with a victory of 2-1. Donegal defeated Carlow with a score of 1-0 in their first of two games but was defeated by Sligo with a score of 2-0, leaving the team with an important task ahead of them, the final. Inishowen wasn’t so lucky, drawing 0-0 with Wexford. Mayo had an eventful evening, losing to MGL North with a score of 3-0 but won against Kilkenny.

By Thursday, Sligo was through to the semi-finals after drawing 1-1 with Wexford but then defeating Inishowen with a 3-0 win. Mayo secured another win after playing against the NECSL with a 1-0 victory. Limerick Desmond advanced to Friday’s semi-finals after finishing at the top of their group.

On Friday, Kerry missed out on topping Group 4 after drawing with Limerick County with a score of 1-1. Sligo was defeated with 4-2 by the Midlands, who qualified for the cup finals. Limerick Desmond was defeated by Sligo on penalties.

On Saturday, Mayo ended their campaign, finishing 6th place out of the 25 teams taking part. The Midlands also ended their campaign after losing to MGL South, but the team was still happy with their achievements throughout the cup as they ranked in the top 2 of the title for the first time.
