The erection of a memorial plaque to honour the memory of Joe Drennan who tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run incident in 2023 has been proposed by members of Limerick City and County Council.

The call for a plaque was made during a recent council meeting, where Cllr Joe Pond highlighted the need to remember the late University of Limerick student and journalist.

The incident occurred on the Dublin Road Castletroy, leaving the community devastated by the loss of a dedicated journalist who was Editor-In-Chief with the Limerick Voice Newspaper and GCN journalist who was described as a “voice for the voiceless.”

Cllr Joe Pond, from nearby Annacotty, has put forth a proposal at a recent meeting of the Metropolitan District of Limerick, urging the council to install a memorial plaque at the site where Joe Drennan lost his life.

The idea of a memorial plaque, which Cllr Pond said is wanted by the family also, is a commemoration of Joe Drennan’s life and contributions and would serve as a lasting tribute to a talented journalist who was loved by all who knew him.

Responding to the proposal, Senior Executive Officer Laura Flannery explained the process for erecting a memorial plaque involves a number of steps including the completion of a civic memorial application form which would then be submitted for consideration and approval by the council’s Civic Memorial and Public Art Technical Committee.

Since his untimely death, Joe has been remembered in many ways, including the release of a charity cover of Joni Mitchell’s song ‘River’ by Emma Langford and Joe’s colleague and friend, Molly Cantwell.

‘River’, an unconventional Christmas track by Joni Mitchell was covered Langford with Cantwell and was released before Christmas 2023 with all funds raised donated to Gay Community News (GCN).
