Cycling Club members braved the cold waters of the River Shannon at O’Briensbridge for their annual St Brigid’s dip in aid of Down Syndrome Limerick on February 5th having raised more than €1,400 so far for the service.

Eleven brave ladies completed the “Dip 4 DSL” with plenty more remaining warm on the banks of the river to wish them well.  Representatives from Down Syndrome Limerick were also in attendance and Sarah Casey, a member of DSL and owner of Sarah’s Delicious Imperfectionz gave a surprise visit with homemade muffins straight from the oven for the swimmers!

Ellen Tuffy, a member of Limerick Ladies Cycling Club and committee member of Down Syndrome Limerick said, “What a fun event for our club! The Limerick Ladies are more than a cycling club; they are a network of women who turn up for each other and support each other.  One of our members, Patricia Finnegan, organises this event each year and wanted to fundraise for a worthwhile cause and she suggested Down Syndrome Limerick.

“As a parent of a child with Down syndrome, DSL is more than a charity to us, it is a place where our children make lifelong friendships; a place where they feel a part of a club; a place where they belong.

“The Limerick Ladies Cycling Club has a similar ethos for their members – they ensure that all abilities are catered for and that everyone is included. And I’m proud to be a part of it. Thanks to the club for the event and to everyone who supported it”.

Martina Condell, Chairperson of the Limerick Ladies Cycling Club says, “Our club is about building friendships, about support and making sure no one gets left behind – either on or off the bike.  We are delighted to support Down Syndrome Limerick.

“The charity is run by family members on a voluntary basis who want to give their children every chance to achieve their potential.

“They, like us, want to ensure that no one gets left behind. The event was a great club event for us.  It brings members together, particularly after the winter months when cycling mightn’t be as frequent! We had lots of fun but we got to do something special by supporting a local charity and the amazing work that they do”.
