A recent national survey confirmed what we all know and feel, that home heating oil prices are, yet again, on the rise. In fact, oil prices on average are up 18% since 2011. The recent Third Irish League of Credit Unions ‘What’s Left’ Tracker 2012 report highlights the fact that 8 in 10 consumers are worried that they won’t be able to cope with the increasing energy costs * .

Sarsfield Credit Union and Monaleen Credit Union, along with local oil company, Emo Oil have just launched Home Heat Assist to help its members manage their heating oil costs better. Credit Union members can avail of a low interest loan, fill up their tank with Emo and save anything up to €265 each time! Members can pay back the credit union in a way that suits them and have less worry about running out of oil when they need it most. With most oil companies not extending credit anymore, this is a crucial service for cash strapped members. There is a special discount with Emo for all members when they mention they are a member of the credit union.

Geraldine Kearney, Loans officer at Sarsfield Credit Union says, “We are delighted to now be in a position to assist members who are facing increased prices in home heating oil. Emo, who have a great reputation here in Limerick for many years, have given us insight into how our members buy oil and together, we have come up with a solution that will really help our members to save money on their home heating oil annual bill. We plan to make the application process easy for all members”.

Emo have donated 1,000 litres of home heating oil to the Credit Unions. The oil will be distributed by the Credit Union to both members in competitions and charities working with the homeless over the coming year, and will go another small step towards keeping those most vulnerable, out of the cold. The first recipient, represented by Fr John Goode, is the Redemptorist in Limerick, who have a long relationship with Sarsfield Credit Union and do tireless work helping those less fortunate in Limerick. Fr Goode was present at the launch to receive the donation and the oil will go to a family most in need under their care.
