Northern Trust employee Myles Shanahan has organised a GoFundMe fundraiser for St Gabriels Foundation and Respite House in Limerick. Myles, along with his colleagues and friends, has been participating in a charity cycle and step challenge throughout the month of August in memory of his son Cillian, who passed away in 2019. Myles will be cycling around Lough Derg during the final week of the fundraiser.

St Gabriel’s School in Dooradoyle caters to children with physical disabilities between the ages of four and 18. Its mission is to “provide pupils with an education that is challenging and appropriate to their needs in a safe and caring environment”.

St. Gabriel’s newly-opened Respite House in Mungret provides overnight and short-term respite care to children with disabilities and intricate medical needs. The team at the respite centre provide a “loving and caring environment to ensure that each child’s individual needs are met during their stay”. Part of St Gabriel’s Foundation, the centre is the first of its kind in the Midwest and is a vital support for families in the region.

Myles aimed to cycle 713 miles (1150km) throughout the month of August, representing the number of days his son Cillian was with him before he sadly passed away. So far, Myles has completed over 1000 kilometres.

Money raised will be used for essential learning equipment in St Gabriel’s School and Respite House, such as iPads and technological toys suitable for indoor and outdoor play. The iPads will have a specialised inbuilt communication app.

Derek Cox, Principal at St. Gabriel’s School said, “Technology is of huge benefit to children attending St. Gabriel’s School. As you can appreciate, technology is expensive and not every family attending the school can afford one for their child. Having iPads available at the school that children can access makes such a difference.

“Many of the children are non-verbal, and technology helps them have a voice. Thanks to everyone for supporting Myles, his friends and work colleagues on their fundraiser. It will certainly make a big difference to the lives of so many children here at St. Gabriel’s School.”

The goal of the St Gabriels Foundation fundraiser is €10,000, with over €9,600 raised so far across 225 donations.

Myles and those partaking have received well-deserved support across social media. One Facebook user commented, “Keep up the good work Myles and friends”, with another saying, “So proud!”
