Limerick Dementia Social Club is set to reopen this September after being shut down for over two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The club will take place on the first Wednesday of each month. It will run from 6:30-8:30 and takes place in Our Lady of Lourdes Community Centre, Rosbrien.

Limerick Dementia Social Club is led by Garda-vetted volunteers with a background in health and social care. The club was previously well attended and proved to be extremely beneficial to those who attended.

The club’s aims are to provide a dementia-friendly space for those with dementia and their carers/family members. A dementia diagnosis is not needed to join. The club wants to reduce the stigma and social isolation that is attached to this illness.

The club promotes open discussions, interactive fun activities, acceptance, and new learning. Studies have shown that support like this relieves carer strain and helps people to continue living well with Dementia in the community.

It is open to all, and no referrals are needed. For the first hour of the social club, informative talks and presentations are given by both therapists and guest speakers. In the second hour, attendees enjoy activities such as singing, dancing, card games, raffles, peer support, arts and crafts, and conversations.

The supports are endless and there is something for everyone. Ideas for activities come from the feedback and suggestions of attendees. Attendance is completely free. Members old and new are welcome.

After first opening in November 2018 to people with Dementia, suspected Dementia, and their carers, it proved to be well needed. The club is the perfect place to unwind for a cuppa and a chat. With each social club meeting having new and different activities, there sure will be something there for everyone.

If you are interested in attending or have any queries about the club, you can email the volunteers at [email protected]
