Speaking today Joe Slattery, Coordinator of Northstar Family Support Project stated, “This year the Northstar Family Support Project will host its 12th Annual Service of Commemoration and Hope. The service will be hosted online due to Covid concerns and we hope that past and present participants of our service, partner organisations, families and individuals who have lost loved ones to addiction will join us online at 7pm on Wednesday, October 20.”

“The Service of Commemoration and Hope is our flagship event, the first of which was held in the Augustinian Church in October 2008, the year in which the Northstar Family Support Project was established. The service is an opportunity for connection and reflection. If you have lost a loved one to addiction you are not alone in your pain. This service allows us to come together to support each other and highlight that substance misuse is a national issue.”

“Northstar Family Support Project has shown great resilience and strength during the Covid pandemic, never failing to provide support and hope throughout this challenging time. Moving the Service of Commemoration and Hope to an online format this year will allow people to participate in a safe and comfortable way. We hope that we can come together as a community again next year but until then we will once again overcome the challenge together”.

Northstar Family Support Project is a community-based project providing non-judgmental, respectful support to people over the age of 18 who are affected by and trying to cope with a family member’s substance misuse, throughout the Limerick region.

Northstar Family Support Project was established in 2008 in response to the growing need for support for families dealing with substance misuse within the family system.

Support to our Participants is offered through a suite of services including One to One Support facilitated by our team of professional Family Support Workers; Peers Support Groups that promote personal development and reduce the shame and stigma that comes from having a family member involved in drug/alcohol misuse; Access to Holistic Therapies; Prosocial activities to promote self-confidence, socialising and offer respite from the home; Drug education programmes and Personal Development programmes to promote growth and the ability to implement positive boundaries between the family member and drug user; Hobby Groups in conjunction with the ETB including arts and crafts classes, creative writing and woodwork; Access to Counselling is facilitated by our service to provide a professional space for participants to deal with their own past experiences.
