St Gabriels School’s charity dance with Jimmy Buckley
St Gabriels School in Dooradoyle are holding a charity dance on March 26 in the Greenhills Hotel. Country singer Jimmy Buckley will be performing on the night, accompanied by his band.
St Gabriels School in Dooradoyle is a primary and post-primary school for children aged 4-18 with multiple physical/sensory disabilities and/or developmental delay, and more serious life-limiting conditions. The school caters for children from the whole of Munster, and is one of only five similar schools in the whole of Ireland.
The pupil/teacher ratio is 6:1, with support from special needs assistants. The children have access to nursing support at the school, and all relevant therapies during school hours at the adjoining St Gabriel’s Centre, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, and hydrotherapy.
While the school has a lot going for all the 47 children they cater for, the one thing that the school is missing is a yard or an outside play area.
The school’s Parent Teacher Association was established a few years ago by a couple of very dedicated parents, Mary Quinlivan and Mary Kelly, and it also includes some teachers. It works to strengthen the school community by way of organising different events throughout the academic year. The PTA also raises funds for all important things that improve the children’s educational experience.
Currently the PTA is committed to raising funds towards a sensory garden and playground for the children and the school, as access to a safe and stimulating outdoor area would be beneficial to the children’s well-being and education.
On the night, the doors will open at 9.30pm, tickets are €15 and can be purchased from St Gabriel’s School, or at the door on the night.
There is also going to be a big raffle with great prizes on the night, with the main prize being a €200 voucher from Limerick Travel the holidays company.
